Removing New Idea 311 elevator bearings

Some of you may remember I traded for a New Idea 311 picker a while back. I got everything lubed up and running except for the elevator. I removed the elevator drive assembly because there is a bad bearing, but with the that removed I still can not turn the elevator drive sprocket by hand. I believe the bearings are frozen up. I see they are a sealed bearing with a lock collar but can you remove that assembly to replace them without removing the elevator? I have never removed the elevator on one and don't quite know what I'm in for or if I could remove it and reinstall it. I have the manual for it but it doesnt tell a whole lot about it. I'm guessing that piece is the same on the later New Idea pickers as well. I took a pic from the manual and it's part number 10 that needs to be removed. I was hoping someone else had been thru this. Thanks for all your help.

i'm familiar with the 324/325, so this is all assuming they are the same or similar: I'm not sure if you have to take off the elevator, but I think you do. it's no big deal to take it off if you have a hydraulic loader of some kind. just remove the drive chain, take the weight off the cable & unhook, then let it down and unbolt at the bottom. i THINK the bottom is anchored by the bearings.

I believe the elevators are the same. That is my problem. I don't have a front end loader or anything.

(quoted from post at 14:14:54 10/05/14) How about a come-along and a shed or tree to tie to?

I thought about using a come along tied to something. That may be my only option.

(quoted from post at 20:39:06 10/05/14) Are you sure its a bearing problem and not a birds nest plugging it up?

It did have some trash in it but I cleared most of that out. When it set it had set with a lot of trash in the bottom of the elevator. The bearings look pretty rusty which is what made me think they are bad. Since I don't have a lift or anything I thought about taking another cable and clamping to the cable holding the elevator and tying it to the tractor. Then removing the elevator brace and unhooking then remove the pin holding the elevator cable to the picker frame and then backing the tractor up slowly letting the elevator down slowly.
