NH 352 Feed mill question

I am looking at a NH 352 feed mill that seller says has a factory sheller attachment. Anybody know anything about this factory sheller? This is my 1st feed mill, and I wasn't aware this was an option. If it is typical or standard, I can quit looking so hard for a quality pto sheller.

The shellers are a good option but were not that common. The sheller unit itself is a pretty simple machine, which is good, parts are still available through New Holland but you can cross reference everything and get chain or sprockets etc. aftermarket for 1/4 of the cost. Are you feeding hogs?

Yep, I am feeding hogs. I got a nice crop of corn, and a neighbor with beans and a roaster. Thought I might try my hand at feed milling. Any advice for a 1st timer?

Depending on how many hogs your feeding you may want to start out with batches of 500 lbs. or even less until you get your formula the way you want it and see how the hogs do on the ration so you can adjust as needed. Some people store feed in the tub but I never did because rats can still get in and it will mold quick if there is very much moisture. I would suggest looking on e-bay or amazon and buying a copy of Morrisons Feeds and Feeding, 21st edition or later, it was the standard in Ag college Animal Husbandry text books for many years, although the most recent editions would have been revised in the late 50's, early 60's, the information provided in calculating and preparing rations is still just as valid today as when written. I always liked grinding feed, maybe because it was one of the first tractor/equipment jobs I did by myself as a kid.

500 lb batches makes sense. I have a few sows, and 1st year gilts, on a 14% maintenance, and a couple dozen on a 16% grower. I like the idea of the feeds and feeding book, I have a couple different versions. You ever grind any alfalfa into hog feed? I have a neighbor with some high quality baleage he'll sell inexpensively, though maybe it could off-set some soybean meal.

Yes, I have used Alfalfa in hog rations and we still do, one of my Sons has a steadily expanding hog business and he uses it in the sow ration year round, supplemented according to whether lactating or not. We also grind Alfalfa with ear corn 50/50 to self feed butcher steers, I have never found a better growing or fattening ration, even use it for the Granddaughters show calves.

I took down my old copy of feeds and feeding, boy howdy, with this mixer, I'll be able to mess around with rations quite a bit. These hogs are gonna get sick of me playing with recipes....
