Technical loose hay question.

You will need +/- 500 cubic feet per ton for loose hay. 20,000 lbs divided by 2000 equals 10 tons. 10 X 500 = 5000 cubic feet. Roughly 18 ft wide, 18 ft long and 18 ft tall. (this is some allowance for less dense hay)
 

Would there be room for a second topping-off, after it cured and settled..?

Just curious..loose hay will settle a good amount..

If you put loose hay up like they use to the stacker in the barn would pitch the hay evenly and while filling up the loft walking on in would pack the hay in. It would settle some more that is why they had to use hay knives and hay axes to cut the hay out. Also hay had to very dry so it would not overheat and start a fire
 
Hundreds of thousands tons of hay are put up every year by the Amish. Those bank barns mows are layered with every cutting and then fed directly down to the livestock below. They don't seem to run out of space. More barn than hay , I would say.
 
We used slings rather than a hay fork. Still one or two men would fork hay out even and tromp the hay down as it was leveled out. We never had to use anything other than a fork to pitch it out of the mow.
 
Loose hay needs to be forked out evenly and trampled on to pack to reduce the space needed. If not willing to do that, you will need alot more space and your pile of hay will end up looking like some sort of rats nest. I have put up loose hay before and am not real sold on it being any easier than handeling small squares if you do them the easy way (bale elevator, etc). Also pretty time consuming. I am not sure if you are considering this as an alternative to baleing, but if it was me I would try to do whatever it took to just bale it.
 
Most of the old hip roof barns would hold your hay and then some at 20,000, and still get the second cutting in and then the third. When we did it the first was under the second and in front of the second then if we had a third it was on top of that.
