535 welding starter roll

Baler works excellent in heavy crops and pretty well in medium hay. In light hay or slick grass that grows on 20 acres of hay I have it will plug constantly when trying to start a bale. I've tried a hundred different speed and pto combinations haha. It's just a bear. I've read some say to weld on the square stock on the starter roll to rough it up a bit. Looking at mine it is well wore and very smooth. Has anyone tried welding it and was it helpful?

Over the yrs I've supervised welding on many of both the original type starter rolls such as your JD 535 and on the newer type spiral round rod starter rolls such as my JD 467. welding on both types helps core starting and helps eliminate hay buildup between frt belts in slick, grass hay.

On starter roll on 535 weld on the leading edge of the rectangular bars which would be the edge you'll see on the top bar from rear off baler.

On my 467 I also had 14" rods on each side welded in between existing rods to help stop hay build up between the frt belts. I rarely have to clean out any hay in frt unless hay being baled gets too dry.
