Oddity about Case hay rake problem

The dang thing wont stay engaged while the wheels are on the ground. jack them up and it works fine??

Sounds like the hub drive or maybe something in the gearbox is wore out if it will spin when jacked up and nothing is in a bind but slip when the weight of the rake is on it. Is it making any racket or skidding the tire when it quits?

Nope. Tires don't lock up, and I can spin the reel until it catches. The wheel paws click great,

What I noticed is that that 1insq lock in bar don't stay all the way in. A 32nd in out and it dosent spin. I took a log wedge and tapped it tight against that bar, and it worked till the vibration loosed the wedge backwards. I could weld the wedge in place, but i hate to do that. knowing the problem, I got a couple fixes to try for it.

Maybe the end of the 1'' lock bar is wore a little and chamfered, might pull it out and if it is wore grind the end flat if its long enough or turn it around if thats an option or build it up a little and grind back off.

Good thought. Ill look into it. I put 3 1/2 washers behind the spring which did no good. H hooked a turn buckle onto the handle and to the angle iron frame by the wheel. Didn't work. Ill try your suggestion.

Don't know the model. Its a 4 bar rake.

When I sent him a handle for it determined it a 4 bar that is a No. 170. The 3 bar is a No. 160 and I still have a parts 160 and I think the parts in his problem are the same in both the 160 & 170 rake.
