Corn picker

The Oliver 83H pickers came out with stripper plates and knife rollers instead of the standard snapping rollers. It shelled a lot less corn... but also ran a lot more trash through the picker in dry conditions.

:D I thought about trying to do that with my old ni#7 once i get moved into my new place. I like the old picker for sentimental reasons but i am on 30 inch rows and the #7 shells about 14 bgpa in the row due to modern corn and the way the snapping rolls are set level. The newer super picker has one roll set at an angle so the ears dont set on the snapping rolls and shell. I also have a ford dearborn mounted picker on a wd 45 that i would like to use if only to open up the field and have the experience of operating a mounted picker.I always thought if someone was patient and inclined to they could figure out a way to do that. The old ac mounted and pull type picker was like thatThe only trouble is the snapping rolls still are set at teh same angle and also snap off stalks easier than the newer super pickers. I tried them both one year in the same field and the super picker , didnt break as many off and i could keep moving and also it paid for itself in shelled corn savings.Iam thinking about using my old two row planter to plant 36 inch rows around and a few places in the middle of the field and then 30 inch rows with my 4 row planter on the rest. Be safe.

I've heard of the Amish in the Pennsylvania area doing some such? Or mounting a JD head or parts on a NI picker?

About 12-14 years ago there were some New Idea superpickers with engines and steel wheels out there in Lancaster advertised with JD knife roll conversions but they disappeared after a few years. Maybe didn't work as well as they wanted.
