My IH 3 bottom plow will not come unhitched when hitting a rock. I have taken the hitch apart and it is free. I have loosened both big springs. What next? I think it is a mod 70 with Hyd lift. Thanks

Your saying it has HYD lift, most HYD lift plows have a COMPRESSION type hitch that gives but will not unhitch , dew the hoses. Sure you know which hitch you have?

John, See my response to you on your first post before you moved it over here. After posting I thought about my comment that all 60 & 70 plows were break back bottoms. I thought I better check that out and remembered that I have a Dealership All Products binder that shows both 60 and 70 and states there were rigid beam plows made requiring a spring release hitch. Gosh, never saw any of those here in Ohio.

Carlyle also brought up an interesting point about a cushion hitch which is also shown in my catalog. It is for cushioning and has a loop hitch that is not designed to break loose.

So, back to your problem, if you have a rigid beam, non break back bottom plow, your break away hitch has a hook that drops into the clevis. And as you mentioned if that is what you have and it does not release we have to determine why. A few things come to mind. Wrong clevis and hook even though it releases may stay stuck in clevis ? Something binding in all the pivot points of hook not allowing it to release ?

Give us all info you can and would sure like to help you figure this out before you break the plow on a rock.
If you do get it to release make sure your hydraulic couplers are mounted in a break away bracket so they will release when plow comes loose. I bought a new #60 Plow w/hyd lift back in the 60's w/ break back bottoms. I did not worry about hyd hoses for plow would not break away from tractor. However , bolt from hitch to drawbar broke causing me to lose the plow. The hydraulic hoses that were threaded into pipe fittings in belly pump on my Farmall M pulled out of the pump. I had to drop the pump down out of the M to remove broken pipe fittings so I could install new ones.

I wish I knew how to put pictures on. I have a regular Plow clevis (large Loop) with a Hook type hitch on plow and 2 long springs on top. I have loosened springs and took cushion hitch apart to make sure everything was free. I have farmed all my life and used this type plow before. I am lost, why it wont release. Should springs be tight or loose?

Im assuming your using a twisted clevis. If sio, Is it too smalla loop for the drop finger to clear when/if it springs.? Also on all my plows, both IHC and Case, I can adjust the springs by loosening them so as to cause the trip to do so under less pressure.

John, This is just a guess. Pivot pin holes worn and elongated where hitch has to pivot and release when rock is hit. When you loosen tension springs all pivot points are loose and parts move freely. When springs are tightened and you pull the plow, pivot points move because of worn holes and all pivot points bind up ???? Pivot pins could also be worn and grooved causing them to bind up under pressure ???? Or combination of worn holes and worn pins ????

Thanks, I took the springs off and I can trip it so I am going to plow day this Sat. I will put springs back on and loose. I will then start to plow while adjusting springs. Hope this works. I use a regular loop type plow clevis.
