New Holland 77 baler

Last weekend we had the Fall Fair at the Minnesota Agricultural Interpretive Center. We combined some oats and then baled the straw with a New Holland 77 baler. I had not seen one of these since I was a kid. It always intrigued me how that plunger would stop at the top of its stroke when it tied a knot.
That's 55 50 Ron driving the tractor.
By the way, the oats was combined with a Ford pull type combine and an AC All Crop 60.

I think that the connecting rod temporarily disconnects when it ties. I have looked it up in manuals before, but cannot remember just how it works. Must have been an okay system. We had a Super 77 and never had trouble with that part. Now about starting that Wisconsin when hot!

You got it, Gary. I had one of those miserable
monsters for my first baler. Bales were too big to
handle, so we put a new trip latch on it. Bales
were too short to stack, but easier to handle. Had
to shut down that &$%*%#& engine down to replace a
shear bolt and it wouldn't restart until it decided
it was cool enough. We used a lot of ice some days
to do that. I can't remember where it went to, but
I was happy to see it go....But you're right- it was
a pretty bulletproof baler.

Yup, took two men and a bulldog to handle those stinkin' bales. Many farmers got so frustrated with trying to restart that danged Wisconsin they removed the shear bolt insert and then they took a 5/8 bolt. Pop had one of those things from the early 50's to about 1965. They were one horse of a baler.

We hooked up and electric start system on ours. Sometimes you would turn that blinkin' Wisconsin over until the starter motor was almost smoking before the miserable thing would fire up again.

as a kid I ran one of those balers for a heighbor. He rode a sled behind. Every time that feeder stopped to tie I wanted to stop the tractor thinking something was wrong with baler.
