Cast iron mower rock guards.

I was taught that you were supposed to hammer the top flange/finger? on a rock guard to where it just clears the sickle. Nowadays, they are making guards out of cast iron. How do you beat them down without breaking them?

They've always been forged steel. Still are. Beat them as hard as you want, you won't snap it off.

Unless you buy them at TSC. What an absolute waste of money those things are. Last time I bought any,I made a round and a half and broke the top off one and the tip and top off another one. I must have gotten a little stone in a knife from a woodchuck mound or something. I've never bought one anywhere but from Agco since.

yep, I bought 3 from TSC, and on e cracked, but when I was finished mowing 12 acres it was still attached while 2 others from who knows where were missing theres.

You got that right Randy - I used to carry a handful of guards and bolts every time I went to mowing. All I needed to do was to find a mole hill or two, and Then it was time to replace a guard or two. TSC were a real disappointment.
