Rubber flaps on New Idea snapping rolls

I've been meaning to ask this for a while. I got the 311 picker I traded for up and running. I noticed on the snapping rolls it has holes in them. I can remember as a kid we had a one row New Idea snapper and my grandfather put these rubber flaps on the snapping rolls and a bolt went thru the holes to hold the flaps on. What was the purpose of those flaps?

Are you talking about the snapping rolls which take the ear off the stalk or the husking rolls which take the shucks off the ear?I know the later super pickers had the rubber stars in the husking bed that moved the ears along and helped husk and the older ones had rubber flaps.

No I'm talking about the snapping rolls.

Cool! =) I never heard of that but i knew the ford dearborn pickers had either quartz coated upper section on the snapping rolls,or rubber coating or a rubber sleave or just plain cast iron.54 years old and learned something new. Like to see a pic of that. The previous owner of my NI#7 did some welding beads on the snapping rolls to assist the stalks going thru. Never thought of using some rubber on there. Depending on thickness might have to make one with a piece of intertube or old belting or tire. THanks

You can see the holes in the snapping rolls in this pic. Oddly enough the parts book I have for this picker does not show them. Maybe other parts books show them.
