PTO shaft for JD 503

Need a new PTO shaft for this mower. One I have is not long enough. Connecting it to a Ford 3600 tractor.

Any decent dealer should have or be able to get you a new shaft with the slip clutch for around $250. You will have to take some measurements to determine the length you require.

Go to a farm store that sells replacement tubes for drivelines and buy the length tubes you need.

Ok,that helps.

How do I get the old one off of the gearbox. There are 2 bolts. One just a bolt with nut. The other with a different kind of bolt. I took pictures of it. Might it be a shear pin?

Also, is a slip clutch better than a shear pin? I know that is a ford or chevy question!

A slip clutch if correctly maintained which many aren't allows operator to hit an obstruction and continue mowing without the need to stop to replace shear pin if so equipped. A lot of slip clutches get put into service without the operator checking to be sure the clutch plates aren't seized. Seized clutch plates cause a slip clutch to be useless in protecting driveline/gearbox.
