Tobacco cutting machine

I guess you had to have cut tobacco by hand to really appreciate what's going on with this machine.

I had heard about machines being used to cut tobacco, but I could never believe that it would work, as I thought it would break all the leaves off the plant.

they are losing some leaves, but with poundage allotments, it would not matter so much, they could just plant more acres.

back in the day, we could only have so much acreage and that was all you could grow, so you did not want all the leaves broken off, you wanted all the leaves possible.

However, it does appear to work and be a labor savor.

I am so old that back in the day we still had to sucker the dark fired tobacco: top to bottom three times before cutting (cutting was splitting and hanging on the stick)

they still cut by hand in my area.and one farmer uses horses to cultivate in his shade tobaco fields when the plants get taller. and he has a couple of hundred acres here in sout western mass. glenn

Had a neighbor bought a tobacco cuttin' machine a few years ago for $24000 and spent about 10,000 making a place to hang the crop and three years later it was sitting in the fence row. I think he said he sold it for 5 or 6 hundred. It just didn't work real well.
