ford 3 point picker

Had a guy call that had a ford three point picker sitting in a shed, both of us know nothing about it, I have not seen it, looking for information about it and what it would fit and run right, thanks

Technically it's not a 3-point picker. The 3-point gets used to lift it up onto the underaxle mounts and then you disconnect the arms and use the rockshaft to move the snout up and down . . . that being said, if there are mounts for it, you need to determine what they are for. If there are no mounts, not hard to fabricate some for just about any utility tractor. Model could be mid-1950s 16-65 or late 50s-60s 601. If it is a blue one, it is a later model.

Takes about 3hrs to mount, if you have all correct pieces.

Once mounted to the tractor it becomes a dedicated picker tractor until picking is complete.

Not a pick this morning and bale hay this afternoon.

If it's wet, you have increased the weight of the tractor about 25+% so you can get stuck much easier.

But it's a shorter rig to turn than pulling the trailer picker with wagon behind.

Talk to some old guys that used one before you lay down any big money, over scrap price.

Be sure you have the proper mounting hardware!!!!!!

As far as being practical there are better ways to pick corn but there is an element of fun with a mounted picker even though it can be a hot and dusty chore. It's good to point out that the picker is not on and off in 5 minutes. I would point out that unless the picker has already set out for a while that it would be good if it could be stored inside during the offseason.

I got stuck less with the 1-row Ford mounted than I did with the New Idea 323 pull type that replaced it. The added weight on the drive wheels actually helped get traction to pull out a loaded wagon, while the New Idea was that much more rolling resistance to overcome in the mud. Now a 2 row mounted picker is a different story because of the weight it puts on the narrow front . . . .

I might add to park it on a solid floor if you can, makes getting everything lined up easier the next time you could put it on. With three people, a couple jacks, and a hard floor, we could get the thing on in about 90 minutes.

I have two of those pickers but I traded them today for a New Idea two row. They do a good job and are simple pickers but yes they are a pain to mount. I had mine mounted on my Ferguson TO-20 at first. Yes they will mount and work with your 8N but when your wagon starts getting full you will know it. The manual recommended turning the right rear wheel around to it's widest setting to overcome the 1700 pounds of the picker hanging on that side. I didn't do that on my TO-20 and it worked ok. Parts are getting hard to get for them. The bearings and belts are common parts that can be gotten most anywhere but a lot of the other pieces are no longer available. Check the rubber on the upper snapping roll. If it is missing or worn down severely it will shell a lot of corn.

Parts are a problem. That's what moved us from a 602 to a pull behind NI. Yes we could get stuck easier with the NI weight being towed rather than on the tractor wheels. Only good thing was we could pull forward with a second tractor rather than only backwards. Our 961-D we left the rears out all the way all year so only had to remove fenders and attach the mounts. The first time we mounted it took most of the day. The last few years we had it down to under 90 minutes from fender removal to picking. The 601 should be much quicker if you leave the mounts attached. Parts availability being what it is- I would not pick the main crop-only something old (and getting rare) to have fun with.

I have a 2 row mounted dearborn on a wd45. I havnt got to use it yet? What was it like to pick with it? Did it shell much in the row?I need to get another one of the pullies that drives the picker .The big cast iron ones that the big heavy belt runs. Need to find another one of those too1Thanks in advance. :D
