Did I do ok on the trade?

I didn't get an answer on my other thread asking about trading corn pickers. So without really knowing anything about a 311 I traded my 601 for the 311. I hope it was a trade for the better.

Now to get it greased up and the chains oiled. It has set for several years.

I should add that I did throw in another 601 parts picker and an old Husquvarna weedeater I had. All together I have about $500.00 in the 311. The biggest reason I traded is around here a New Idea picker is far easier to sell than a Ford picker. I'm not joking or exagerating on these prices. Where I live a New Idea one row snapper like a 309 or so brings $2500.00 to $3500.00! Deer hunters have driven the prices thru the roof. The guy that had this picker couldn't use it because he planted his rows on 30 inches. I measured before I traded, from runner to runner on my planter was 37". Center to center of the snapping rolls on the 311 measured 38" so I should be ok. I will widen my planter some more next year if needed. I did notice some of the rubber flappers need replacing on the husking bed. I imagine they are still available from Agco but I think I will take the cheap way out and cut some out of a tire. Any pointers anyone wants to tell me about a 311?

Some guys have gotten by using a wide row picker on narrow rows. I think the time frame and technology is about the same. I kind of wondered after looking at my ford mounted picker if that is where new idea got the idea for improvements to their. There is a guy or two who will make a wide row picker into a narrow row picker. Plus i think the new idea parts are a little bit easier to find.I think you both did ok.I almost bout a 601 but didnt know if i could find the mounting brackets for my allises. The biggest thing is the changed angle of the snapping rolls. My 325 when i had it paid for itself in shelled corn savings in about 3 years.Good luck and be safe

The pull type picker is easier to use in that you do not have to "mount" the picker. The New Idea pickers will work fine unless your corn is real dry. Then it will nibble some kernels off the butt of the ear as it picks the corn. The husking bed on the New Idea picker will clean the corn husk off much better than the For 601 picker.

If you look online there are several places that make after market parts for the New Idea pickers. With the Ford your pretty much on your own for new parts.

One thing that will help you a lot is to take a DA sander and clean the rust off the sheet metal on the header. With it rusty that way the corn will not slide into it very well. Clean it up and things will go much easier. You can paint it with slip paint or lots of guys just use Aluminum paint.

I had thought about painting it but I'm curious as to what slip paint is. I've never heard of that before.

Before you try to run it, pull the door off the bottom of the wagon elevator. Then run the picker slowly and have somebody ready to pull the elevator clutch rope while you watch for bird nests coming down to the sprocket.

(quoted from post at 22:08:50 09/11/14) How are your tires and tubes? I have two of each like this

He has already replaced one of the tires. The other one is holding air. For the moment anyway...lol. Is yours for sale?
