Put new knotter brakes on NH 275 haybaler and trying to adjust knotter brake. One person told me to tighten brake bolts to 1 5/8, another said to adjust until brake holds needles tight when knotter is tripped. Anyone know for sure brakes are about $90.00 a set. Thanks for your help Joe

I just don't want to tighten up to tight and wear out the brake. I've tripped knotter and turned flywheel until needle move into bale chamber and tightened up brake until i have to jerk needles to barely get them to move. you think I've got to tight?

I'd adjust until the brake holds the needles tight. That's it's job. The length of a spring is all fine and good as long as everything else is all fine and good... and working correctly. ON a 40 year old baler... you adjust until it does it's job.

That's somewhere between OK and a smidgen too tight. Run it some and if it hasn't run in and loosened up a little, back off one or two flats on each nut.
