Hi

I have a David Brown blade that has rusted as seen in the pic. Between where the bottom piece meets the top piece. Hitting it will rust killer. But recon I should fill it to keep dirt etc out.
What do you think bog filler. Silastic et?

Cheers

You can go at it with a needle scaler and get the rust out.Of course you may go right through the metal. Filling the seam might help. Most anything would do it as long as it seals the metal and doesn't fall out. That happened because the dirt was never cleaned out of the seam and it held moisture there...for a LONG time by the looks of it.

It's been sitting for 6 years. So that would do it. Going to hit it with a metal wheel and go from there.

Take the Cutting edge off and knock all the scale and rust out and off..
Give it a good heavy coat of Rust Converter and Paint well..
Should last for many years..

You need to get it good and clean first. beware of painting over any rust, because it makes it look better but accelerates the rust. If you mean wire wheel when you posted metal wheel, that is only a final clean up step. As Brett said a needle scaler or what I would be doing is taking the cutting edge off and beating on that scale with my slag hammer. The blade is rusted so bad that even if you get both surfaces really clean, there will be a lot of spaces in between to hold dirt and moisture. What I would do is after a good cleaning and acid prep to convert the rust is still at the bottom of the pits, is to paint and assemble with large washers between the blade and cutting edge so that you can clean between, then it can dry out. Most importantly don't try to seal between, because you will be sealing moisture in that will accelerate the rust.
