Check row planting sweet corn?

Has anyone ever planted sweet corn in check rows? I'm
working on getting my JD 290 "check row ready" and was
thinking about using it for the sweet corn patch next spring.

Might be worth a try.
I have not found a sweet corn variety that you can use weed and grass control.

This check planting might be the ticket to keeping the corn plowed and grass down.

The check equipment was designed for the planter set on either42", 40" or possibly 38" rows and the wire has to match the row spacing and most popular was 40" on the knots on the wire. This is about the only information given in parts or operators manual. And checking was usually 3 kernels per hill with a possibilty of 2 kernels per hill, some setups you could get 4 kernels per hill. So unless ypu have some very odd equipment would you want equilivent to 1 kernel every 13" in 40" rows, If you would havery thing set up correctly you might get 1 kernel every 10" in 40" rows. That is only half as heavy as I ever planted sweet corn. Enough population would be your big problem. So if from 2 to 4 kernels per every square of 40" is satifactory for you then you could do it. I do not know if the check wire would work with any narrower rows tha the 40" but if it would then you would have a rectangle per hill of say 30" rows with kernels at 40" in the row. So if you are thinking about cultivating both ways unless you have a single row cultivator that would cultivate a single 30" row (very unusual) then you would need 2 cultivators. And to help control weeds would be only advantage to checking.

I'd say go for it and have some fun! It's not like your trying to payoff your mortgage, if you get half as much sweetcorn and have twice the fun it's an easy decision.
Get some photos of it next spring, haven't seen check rows sin ce I was a small boy 60+ years ago!

Thanks,
Have you tried any of these varieties?

All I know was my local feed and seed store said they were not able to buy roundup ready sweet corn seed.

Maybe buying small quantities is the problem, like one pound of seed.

Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to give it a shot. My roll of check wire is for 40 inch rows so I'll have to move my planter out a couple inches as well as the 2 row cultivator I use on my JD 60. This year I drilled it in 38" rows and it worked well but I still fought weeds within the rows that the cultivator couldn't get to, that's why the thought of doing check rows came to mind. I had done the math and figured on a drop in population with check rows so I'll just have to plant a bigger patch. I'll be sure and take pictures!

And if that doesn't work out, it's a good excuse to find an old JD rotary hoe to drag through the corn to help get those in-row weeds. Neighbor plants his in shallow furrows so that he can throw dirt in the rows when the corn gets bigger to bury the weeds, but those furrows can cause problems if we get too much rain before he gets them filled back in.

You find a good Ford hoe with the angle type teeth and it will do a better job than any JD ever did. Have had both, now retired so now have neither.
