international 420 baler

So I just picked up a IH 420 baler.

Anyone have experience with them,I've always been around NH hayliner and JD 14&24T.

Just curios about good, bad.parts .Any info really.

Im not sure when the cut off was but ih got rid off the
deering knotters and built the mccormick knotter it wasnt
long and they found out that was a mistake and went back
to the deering knotters . i think your safe but i would take a
new holland first

The 420 has the same knotters as the 440 and the 430, the problem is the rest of the baler is very light duty and it even makes a smaller than standard bale. IH quit making them 20 years before I ever saw one in person and I've never seen one in operation. The way it feeds hay into the bale chamber is completely different than all other IH balers. I can't imagine finding parts will be very easy.

Actually IH used the McCormick knotter for several years - the 45, 46, 47 and the earliest of the 440 balers used it (along with the lesser models produced at the same time). Pretty much destroyed IH's name for square balers.

I don't think the 440 made it through the first year of production with the McCormick knotter before IH came out with their improved Deering knotter they called the "all twine". IH made the "all twine" in a package so it could be retro installed on the older 46 and 47 balers - and a lot of them did get this improvement. It only took them 20 years but IH was finally making a decent baler in the 1970s with the 440 and its replacement the 445. The 440 is a huge improvement over the older "high capacity" balers like the 47 and the 46. It seemed the 440 could go through the field twice as fast as previous models even if they had the updated knotters.

Thanks guys.
I got a pretty good deal (next to free) on it.
I also don't bale a lot of hay.
It is a working baler.

I would have bought a deere or NH but in my area they are really pricey.
So keep them goods and bads coming at least I'll know what to look for when it breaks.

OK,the first thing to do is to order a book.It will
save countless hrs of frustration. It will have
trauble shooting guide so you can easily fix any'no
tie' problems. That book(your 'bible') will be the
cheapest/best thing you will do for your baler. Good
luck!

I had the 'honour' of trialling a pre-production 445D ( i.e. the one with the Rasspe knotter, as used by NH for example) for Internationals in 1970 something and very good it was too. I had never heard of a 420 so I looked it up on Google and I have been watching one working on Youtube. How IH got away with using a cable to run the packer drive god only knows.

I've seen trained servicemen pull their hair out trying to figure out a square baler and knotting problems - let alone a part time farmer using the manual to easily fix any no tie problem.
