Earl IL: moldboard manufacturing question

Earl IL,
What material and processes did Crescent Forge and Shovel use to manufacture moldboards? What alloy steel? Surface hardening? Heat treatment?

I've got a pair of Crescent Forge moldboards that appear to be softer than OEM boards. If I knew what went into making them originally, maybe I could send them off for surface treatment myself.

Thanks for your time.

Crescent used 1080 steel & had there own in house heat treating system. They did manufacture some products that was water quenched, but it didn't carry their logo stamped on the back side of the moldboard. Heat treated was suppose to be stamped.

Do you know what their heat treating process was? My moldboards are stamped with the Crescent Forge logo.

The heat treat was the latest piece of equipment they had. It had its own furnace section, which product moved through it on a drag chain system. It then took a 90 deg. turn & drop in a tank of oil, & then passed through the second tank of oil. I couldn't believe it when White Horse Machine scrapped it. I think Steve Rea has some pictures of it.

Earl, thanks for the information. I'll try to get them hardness tested. I can scratch them pretty good with a screwdriver or putty knife and leave a scratch deep enough I can feel with my fingernail. I can't leave any scratch on an OEM moldboard. I'd like to further surface harden them, just as a learning exercise.
