New Idea 12A Conveyor chain broke

Apron chain broke with most of a load, of course. Shoveled it
out and pressured washed it off so it's ready to be repaired.

I used a come along and got the chain centered in the bed.
What's left of the old links are removed and new parts are
ordered from Shoups. I've never done one of these before.

Will it go back together in the bed or should I pull it around and
do it under the spreader?

PO welded a couple bars to the bar links. OEM is riveted. Which is better?

Any other insight would be great.

Doing on the bed is generally a little easier, but not much if it's flat link. Back the tension all the way off. As far as welding or rivets, a good weld should be okay but I don't think one is preferable to the other. A bad weld is definitely worse than a rivet.
 
When the chain breaks your best friend is a tractor and loader. Just tip the spreader over and dump, but be careful and don't do more damage. I have did it with the same spreader as you have. I have never shoveled off a load, and have did it with no other damage.
 
I always bolt the apron bars to the links. If the bar is bent, I just cut a piece of angle iron and drill a hole in each end. Short 1/4" bolts work fine, just feed the bolt from the bottom. Been doing this for years and never had a problem...use the shortest bolt (3/4") possible.
 
Make sure the chain has equal number of links in both sides and that the bars are straight across so they hit the rear sprocket exactly the same or it will be broken again within a load. And bolts-rivits will let the bar if it gets slightly bent move on the link so the link will stay straight on the sprocket, welding will not do that. I have 3 of those setting here as parts rakes that I need to get dismantled for using the parts on a No. 10 and No. 9 And No. 8 spreaders that are in the wating line for rebuilding before going back to hay rakes for next year.
