i'm looking for a place to buy front knief head guide. rear knief head guide. wear plate'guard plate for a #8 bar?

Should be able to get what you need from your JD dealer!
Check out JD parts catalog # 817 pages 25-3 & 25-4.
Should be able to get to that "on line".

I am not to happy with JD Dealer. I ordered 3 guards , a few wear plates and hold downs and a box of bolts for my #5 mower and it cost $170. The guards all have the same number but it looks like 2 of them are different and don"t fit right. They wrote it up for JD hold down clips but sent me generic ones, good thing I have some used ones. The last time I got parts they were expensive but much higher quality than generic ones but never again. They dont seem to want to do business with people that have old stuff like me.

I feel your pain.... I just "visited" the local John Deere dealer for a few parts for my 39N sickle mower.
a 7/8 inch long rivet for the knifehead was $10 each.
wareplates were $ 4.25 each.
I am going to buy the stuff on-line to rebuild my second sickle bar for this mower but I do not think much of it will come from the JD dealer.
I will take the time to cross to some after market parts were possible.

Oh and on my way home from the JD parts dept I stopped by Tractor Supply and picked up a 1/2 pound box of 15/16 rivets for $3.99 and will grind off 1/16 of an inch off the rivet the next time I need to replace a section on the knifehead.

My wife says they are "Real proud of them Green parts"

If you don't like dealing with Mother Deere, try any local farm supply place or some of the online outfits. I forget the name of the one I used...Herschel maybe?

Good advice above, I am checking out the local feed and hardware stores.
But some parts are only available through "Mother Deer" So When I have to pay, I just have to pay. But you are right there are many parts I can source outside of John Deere. In my previous post I listed the wareplates as $4.25 but I happened to look at my invoice ant they were really $5.25 guess I mis-typed it.
Still I have no reason other then cost to complain about John Deere. How many other companies are providing parts for 40+ year old equipment.

Do you know if the bottom shaft at the pieman drive on a model 8 has a sealing device? I am rebuilding one and it appears there is a bore the same as the input shaft but the pika wheel looks like it is cast. Maybe a felt washer? Thanks for the help.

Thanks Jim!!!

Moving down to the sickel blade, I have a bucket of parts and I am trying to reassemble. Do you have or can you point to a parts list assembly drawing like you provided for the gearbox for the higed assembly where the blade is attached?

Your help is invaluable to this rookie sickel mower restorer!
