About sick of fixing stuff!

In the last week I've spent the better part of 4 days taking 2 Hesston 5500 RB's and making one good one. Replaced a lot of bearings, adjusted chains and did some welding on it too. It's still a $1500.00 baler, but at least now it should be a WORKING $1500.00 baler! Also spent a day working on my old Kuhn tedder/rake. Found that I needed a shim to take up space in the gear mesh. Didn't have the right material, that white nylon stuff they make bearings out of, but I hope the plastic I used holds up long enough for me to find some of the good stuff. Got the new/used wobble box on the 472 haybine. Did a bunch of adjusting and such too. Seems to run good now.

Now we're into the old 68 NH square baler. We've got the top metal off and there's still more to go. The feeder tine gear box lost a bearing. Gotta tear half the machine apart to get to it. I'd junk the thing but it makes such a nice bale now!

I'm tired of fixing stuff though! But we need to kill time till hay weather comes back. Just wish I was killing it doing something other than getting covered in grease and rust!

If there isn't something sitting here in pieces waiting for parts or the time to put it back together,it just ain't normal.

What he says^^^^

I tend to make sure my haying machinery is in good shape before hay season starts though.
Unless i do something stupid i have had very few things goofing up on me while making hay, i hate having breakdowns in the field with a passion.
This year i had none doing 300 acre.

Don't feel bad. My neighbor has an SP New Holland discbine which he bought new this spring ($$$), sitting on blocks in his yard because a hydraulic motor failed and took out other parts of the system. Dealer is trying to get it up and running again under warranty but it's not going quickly. On top of that, a recurring drive chain problem with his also brand-new New Holland big square baler has been driving him nuts, but NH says they have a fix for that on the way.

That do pretty well sum it up, don't it, Randy?

Bret,
Ain't been fishin' in nearly two years. Hardly have time to get set up for hunting season, last couple of years.

fixed my baler this past winter, new chains and some
sprockets, overload clutch, and re-adjusted
everything back to factory... then put my fwa MF in
the shop to change pto oil seals (got sick of the
small leak)

I'll give you all one guess as to which machines
have given men the most grief since then...

I love it. Every bearing and seal in the feeder tine gear box was shot. Box had zero oil in it even though it had been topped off. Seals have probably been bad since I got it 15 years ago. Of course you can't see any oil dripping because everything is covered in sheet metal and there's no such thing as a dip stick. Got most of the bearings at NAPA for $19.00. Had to order the seals and one bearing from NH.

When I get done with this thing I'm going to have a like new 55 year old baler that would still do well to bring $500.00. Kinda makes you wonder why you fix stuff sometimes.

BTW- Everything was supposed to have BEEN FIXED except for the haybine. That was a surprise. Seems I get new problems cropping up as I work.

Dunno what to tell you. I farm with older stuff. $10K tractor instead of $100K tractor...etc. The time I spend fixing stuff is the price I pay for buying used. It's one of those trade offs in life. Like you, though, I would like to see the end of that line outside my shop. Just for a week? I've even tried pulling stuff out of line and replacing it. Doesn't work. Still never caught up.

A $10K tractor! You're in rich mans country. My highest dollar tractor cost me $2500.00. In fact, that's the most expensive thing I've bought.

(quoted from post at 20:19:06 08/19/14) Better watch out Bison you may jinx yourself for next year. LOL
ight be,
I ain't gonna have a sleepless night about it.
I ain't superstitious. :D
