My little NH 68 square baler is making good bales using my Ford 5000.

Once in a while I get a long bale.
Any ideas why?

How can I correct this?

Thanks for the assistance.

I was buying some hay years ago and were getting bales out of the top mow. The farmer tossed me a shorter than usual bale and said " the baler was looking out for him". So in a while he tossed down a longer than average bale. " I said looks like the baler was looking out for me".

What was good for one is not good for the other who is right?

Always the view is in the eyes of the beholder.

I love your story thanks for telling it.

The metering wheel uses tiny grooves to move the arm upward till it trips. They fill with rust, dirt, mud and they simply wear. This year I had to grind the little nub that carries the arm over the wheel back about 1/8" and file new grooves in mine. They'd simply worn away giving my odd sized bales. No long bales now.

What length bale are you trying to make with your NH68 and how long are the long bales?

We need light bales around 40 lbs. We are not young and need all the help we can get. So short and tight maybe. Long one was twice the lenght of shorter. About 3 1/2 feet long for the short ones.

Short

Sometimes with our old S-77 baler, you would get a big slug of hay the last plunger stroke before tying and you would get a long bale. The next bale would be correspondingly smaller. The Super 77's were notorious for that. Not sure about the 68's though.

There 's a small friction wheel on the metering shaft. It makes contact with the trip arm.It can be worn to the point that it will slip.Look to see if the trip arm has a smooth edge. That will tell you if you have slippage.Easy fix.

I'd start there.Good Luck.

The measure wheel is either sticking at times or lack of hay under it is making it so it does not turn as it should. You may need thicker windrows because lack of hay as in small windrows can cause that also

Please explain how a thin windrow will cause a sq bale to be longer than what baler is set for.

No argument from me just facts: it takes hay traveling through chamber to turn measuring wheel to raise arm to the slot to engage trip dog.
Simple explanation: no hay coming in chamber,no measuring arm movement,no bale created short or long.

On my 271 a small windrow does in fact cause bales that are long so hey that is why I say what I say and I will NOT see you answer if you do. Please since we can not get along do not answer my posts

The only reason we don't "get along" is because I don't believe everything you state and you do't like it when someone disagrees with you. All I politely asked for stating PLEASE was an explanation. I see in no way how wanting the "correct information stated" harms this wonderful very informative forum.

Good Day,Jim

The metering wheel insert can wear the trip arm so much it won't engage the metering wheel. Had that happen on a NH S 77. I welded up and ground down the trip arm until it engage the metering wheel again. Lasted as long as I kept the baler.

If memory serves me right, there's a spring that holds the arm in against that wheel too isn't there?
