leaky brush hog

Hi, I have a very leaky brush hog.... think its a Woods. Just bought it. I removed the gear box and opened the lower plate on the housing to get to tbe lower seal. The seal in the plate tha I removed is just made of plastic. I thought it would be metal where it presses I to the housing. Hopefully ca. Find a replacement..maybe even a matching metal seal. Is this the only seal i need to worry about to stop the leak at the bottom of the mower?

Many times the reason the seal starts leaking is because the bearings are worn. Worn bearings let the shaft run out of true and that is what cuts the oil seals.

If you are in that deep I would replace the bearings. Might also refill the gear box with corn head grease, it's one of the best lubes around and will not run out as fast as gear oil.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try just replacing that lower seal and see if that stops the leak. The oringal was a rubber coated metal... I should have realized. No problem replacing that. shaft and bearings seem good at this point.

The other thing that most boxes lack is a vented fill plug which lets the box breathe. As a result, when the box gets hot and internal expansion occurs it builds up pressure to assist in forcing lube out the lower seal. The vented plug prevents the pressure buildup.

I used Lubriplate 105 in mine since we don't have corn head grease down here. Autoparts store, used in engine rebuilding, consistency about half way between 90w oil and #2 grease. I use it in my tractor steering box also due to worn seals.

Thanks Mark. It does have a vented a plug. Though my other brush hog doesn't have a vent and found that one leaking recently. Didn't realize it needed a vent until recently. Thanks for the tip on the lubriplate.
