Another problem solved!

My ancient, old as I am, NH 68 baler was doing a good job yesterday- until! When I tightened up the tension on the bale chute I started getting broken right strings. Couldn't figure it out but it seemed to happen whenever I was in an area where there was no hay and the plunger was just cycling. Finally got to the point where I was breaking every 4th-6th bale even when we were in hay. Took the tension off and pulled all the hay out of the chamber. Turns out someone used a carriage bolt on the right side of the bale chute where it attaches aft of the bale chamber. The left side bolt is missing altogether. This made the chute a little cockeyed and the strings were catching on the carriage bolt head where it stood proud from the hole during the compression of the plunger stroke! This AM I will replace the bolts and see how things go.

The good news is my adjustment to the feeder tines squared up my bales. The bad news is the knotters are really showing their age and my family is screaming for Dad to get a kicker baler.

Good info on the 68, I'm keeping notes!

Going to tinker with mine today - again getting to know it.

One question, the rod from the knotter drive that attaches to
the needle yoke - in this baler' past life, it's been hammered
straight. It should have a slight bow in it. Would it be possible
to measure yours and give me the dimensions of yours? I'd
like to put mine back into original shape.

Thanks!
Bill

I'll be next to mine here shortly. I can take a pic if you want.

A pic would be great! If you could take a few measurements -
that would be much appreciated too.

Thanks!

Jason - good info!

I looked at the rod again and believe it's OK, but I'm away from
the baler now and won't be able to measure it until next
weekend.

Thanks again!

Update- got under the baler and got that carriage bolt out. Turns out it's the correct bolt alright, but since the other was gone it let this one stand proud. Put it back and tightened it down good and put a carriage bolt on the other side too as it should be. Reset my tension and we had a grand total of one missed knot in the field and one "banana bale" at the barn out of 200 some bales. Not a lot for the big guys with kickers and hay crews to mow it away, but it was me and my 11 and 12 year olds hand loading off the chute and hand loading onto the elevator at the barn. Never got baling till 3:20PM as I had to rake 2 fields after the dew was off around 11AM.

Not bad for old equipment.

You must of got your mower fixed if you're baling.
We did the front field at Turners. 29 loads on Sat
and 16 yesterday. I'd definitely be looking for a
kicker baler.

Borrowed 488. That part you gave me might work if I can fix some of the other bunged up stuff on the wobble box...maybe. I'll bring it back if I can't make it work. Got a used WB allegedly enroute, we'll see if it ever gets here and is any good.

Can't imagine doing fields like Turners. I'd fall asleep going in a straight line that far!
