New Holland 451

So here's likely an easy one for all you NH guys out there. How do you go about tightening up the belt. Traded my IH 130 mower off yesterday for a 451 and couldn't be happier with it, but for the belt coming off occasionally. I'm sure it's simple, but I'd appreciate some help, and illustrations especially.
Thanks,

Mac

From the rear there is a bolt under the pulley.Tighten the 3/4 in nut until about 1 in deflection on the belt.If belt is tight but still slips you need a new belt even if it still looks good. They are good mowers.

You won"t be happy long!!! Those drive heads require lots of work and parts. Lose the crankshaft and its about $2000 Worst mower i ever had!!!! Myself and others got rid of them. IF I NEVER SAW ANOTHER IT WOULD BE TO SOON!!!

I go along with maybe a new belt, I'm sure you saw the bolt that was mention below that tighten the belt. Also check the alinement from the body of mower to cutter bar, sometime that will cause a problem.

As far as causing a bad crank, keep a close eye on the cotter pin in the castle nut. It will wear and fall out. Then you get to replace the crank. The only good part, buy the bolt, five bucks or so, use you shop press, remove the old bolt, after freezing the new bolt, press it in. I use a 20T press, just before you think it's not going to work, it starts to move. Good luck, a NH 451 is a very good mower, it would be better if it had a lift on it when you move from one place to the other, gets heavy after you pass retirement age.;-)

Thanks for the help! Tightened that bolt down and got a good tension on the belt. Mowed 3 acres this AM and not on belt slip. On the other hand, I am gonna have to replace all of the sections on the knife, as they are all quite worn. Finish one thing, start 3 more.

Thanks again,

Mac

Ah, a good tight belt and worn cutter edges.

Bet you found the next weak link by now. ;) my 501 mower would break the pitman stick next, but you don't have that, so something else will give. Likely the sickle head?

Remember, farming is fun..... ;)

Slapped a new knife in today and laid some more down. Roger, I carry a grease gun on the tractor, and a spare knife with me to the field in the truck, along with extra grease, tools, water & gasoline. I take my hay cutting seriously, and I don't like going back to the shop, even if its only 300 yards away. And yes, Paul, farming is fun. ;)
