balancing cutter blades

I have been doing some reading here on cutter (shredder, bush hog) etc usage. I have a well used JD413 that I just purchased, blades were in pretty bad shape.

Doing some reading here folks mention balancing the blades. How does one do that? I have balanced lawn mower blades with the center hole, but I can't figure out how you would balance cutter blades unless maybe you take them off and do it with a scale.

I sharpened the ones on it with a grinder as I did not have a wrench large enough to take them off. If anybody happens to know what size those nuts are, that would be handy to know. This will be the first time that I have cut our property and I thought I'd use the old blades for the first time or two before replacing them with a new set.

YOU GOT A SET OF SCALES, GETTING THEM BOTH THE
SAME WEIGHT HELPS . i DOUBT YOU WILL EVER GET THEM
PERFECT AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN USED / ABUSED

A balance beam with hooks on each end to hang them from should work. Not a balance beam but a gambrel (like you hang deer from) should get them close enough.

I use a scale and get them both the same weight. That's the
best you can do. Just that removes lots of shimmy on a
shredder.

(quoted from post at 10:31:05 08/10/14) Its been my experience that the nuts usually take a one and three quarter inch socket.

I was doing some maintenance on it over the weekend, I raised the arm that supports the wheel and there is an access hole there to get to the nuts. They are 38mm/1 1/2".
