McCormick 55T baler

I would just use plastic. But I assume you need to have sisal. It's getting harder to find.Ask at coops, feed stores, implement dealers....Anyplace that sells twine.IIRC,the 55 (as did the 50)use a special size twine/box.Yoou're out of luck on that.Make a box to accomodate 'modern' twine.

Use 9000 sisal twine. The knotters will not like plastic at all. Could also probably use 7200 sisal twine. The 7200 is thicker than the 9000. My Mccormick 45 baler uses 9000 sisal. 30 year old twine is probably rotten and will break easily if used. Hope this helps.

Many thanks. Sisal 9000 is what I'm going to get.

Your McCormick 45 has got to be older than my 55 isn't it?

The mccormick 45 baler was made before the 55T, but then the later 45 models were made along side the 55T until 1958 with some improvements over the earlier model 45's. A list I found from the machinery list from the Wisconsin Historical Society International Harvester Collection shows the 45 model was made from 1946-1958, with over 102,000 made. The model 55T was made from 1953-1959, with 13,337 units being made.

I would start with the 9000 sisal twine. If the knotters are worn out, try 7200 sisal twine.

That baler was designed for the 7200 twine, 9000 not yet dreamed of. I would try to get what it was designed for.
