john deere 14t baler problems

I have a john deere 14t baler serial #64001. I am having trouble with the needles coming back to home position. They get with in around an inch of locking into home position. I have tried tightening and loosening the break. I unhooked the needle frame drive arm and it acts like the trip dog is releasing before the needle drive will make a full cycle. Anyone have any ideas?

It should not be too tough to check if the knotters are in the "neutral" position when the drive dog kicks out.

The needle brake being too tight is NOT your problem.

Have you timed the baler, and checked the needle lift height, as is specified in the Operator's Manual?

(You DO have one, right???)

Also, there is a shear pin in the needle lift link.

Have you determined that is intact?

Bob is right. You need a manual. It will give step by step instructions for repairing/adjusting.Suonds like it may have skipped a tooth.DO NOT RUN IT!!!! you will soon buy new needles if you do.....

I agree with what Bob says. My 14t jumped time this spring. Did exactly what you are talking. I spent an afternoon timing it with manual in hand. First time I tried, it did not work. Second time was the charm. It has not missed a bale since. Patience and a manual.

Yes I have the book. I have timed it just as the book says. Yes the shear pin is intact. I even unhooked the needle frame and the knotters still will not completely lock into neutral.

The trip dog is releasing before needles return to home position. Check the trio dog mechanism for wear. Is trip dog clutch key tight in grooves? Is disk on LH end of needle lift shaft tight on splines?

Could there be a spring missing on the trip mechanism? Had this happen on a NH S-69. Kept shearing flywheel shear bolts. Took a little bit to figure out that it was missing. Not familiar with the 14t though, so probably not much help.
Did see the same thing happen on a Ford 530 and it broke the needles.

I replaced all the keys and replaced the bushings in the drive. the needles still will not go to home by rolling by hand but running it with the tractor they work as they should so far.
