New Holland 851 baler

Trying to help a neighbor tighten the chain in his 851 baler. I
know we need a manual but we need help now. Read some
other forums and on here today without getting a clear
explanation. He insists he wants the chain shortened. I would
think there must be another way with springs on the side. So
what does the manual say? And how do you know when the
chain needs shortened?

The chains do eventually need to be shortened up to take the slack out . The big springs supply the tension after you get some hay made inside the BAler . There are to bolts on each side of the blaer you can adjust to tension the chain after no more adjustment you have to shorten the chain to do that you take one set of links they are made in a set of 3 links per set so you have to remove one tube as well.

Before you brake the chain be sure to tie it together first or it will come outa there like a bullet and it is heavy and miserable to get back in

So what are the guidelines for adjusting spring tension? There are lots of threads on the adjusting bolt and there is the u bolt the can be moved also. His complaint is trouble starting a bale.

There are some settings to make that will make it start a bale a lot better up on the top where the cables run to the front there are to half moon shaped pices that look like half of a pulley it will start a blae a lot better if you turn them over so the cable doesn't run over them

Dittos on what ertl said. Tie it together with a cable come-along on each side of the links and bar you are going to take out. Remove the three links and bar then ratchet it back together. I had one of the cables at the top which keeps tension on the chain break. Now that was a nightmare. When I went to the dealer to order a new one, he asked if I had been oiling those cables? Nope. Check your cables for fraying, if it is replace them before they break. If they look good, keep em oiled. My first round baler was a 851 with hydraulic tie.

I have to add that the spring tension has nothing to do with the length of the chain. Be very careful wnen you break the chain. We used wire the first time, wire broke that chain ran out on the ground in a pile in a heart beat took two of us half a day to put it back IT IS HEAVY.
