Setting up coulters C-20 plow

I just recently went through and replaced all the wear parts on my c-20 plow but I wanted some advice on making sure my coulters are set correctly. Is the center of the coulter supposed to be directly above the tip of the point? Do you have it set, so the coulter cuts slightly to the left of the shin(if sitting on tractor)? The coulters themselves are worn but about how deep are they supposed to cut?

I know so people dont like them, or cause a lot of trash build up but just doing some plow days etc and would like to have them on and work as intended. Thank you in advance!

I don't know if IH recommended any different but Ferguson recommended setting the coulters about 1 1/4" above the share and to the left of the share 1/2" to 3/4". I would think that would apply to most plow coulters unless it was real rocky or trashy.

Soil type plays a role in placement as far as depth and distance forward of tip of point from my understanding of what I have read. Tougher soils may need it further forward to cut soil before it breaks off however it pleases , and may need to be shallower to prevent the coulter from lifting the plow . Usually about 3/4 of an inch left of the landside is where you want it . I have been lucky so far to have a couple plows apparently set up by oldtimers that knew what they were doing so I haven't had to do much experimenting . No such luck with the latest project though.....

Jake,
Set coulter depth so hubs are running 3-4" above soil level when plowing...that way the coulters are slicing down on the material. If too deep, the coulter just pushes material forward and does not cut well.

Coulter hubs should run 1" ahead of plow point.

Coulters should run 3/4" to the "left" of edge of moldboards...and if you can adjust for it the trailing end of landside should be running 1/4" off the furrow wall...that decreases friction and makes the plow much easier to pull.

I've plowed for over 60 yrs with trailer plows and I still see poorly adjusted plows at plow days and they leave a mess and this results in the tractor pulling far too hard.
