Mathews rotary scythe 9d

I found a Mathews 9 ft rotary scythe. I have a manual ordered. They clam 45 to 60 horsepower will work.
It has a 1000 rpm power shaft. My case 830ck has the pump turnes up. If my present new idea cut conditioner power shaft 550 will inter change. Will the mower cut decent? A 150 dollar investment. Thank you, Mike
 
I used to have a MC rotary scythe, figure 10 HP per foot to mow hay and they dont do good job unless they are kept very sharp.It worked good to condition hay and clip straw and windrow it before baling.
 
I ran a 7 footer with 60 HP, and it worked fine. But if it has a 1000 RPM PTO shaft, its geared to run at 1000 RPM. If you try to operate it half as fast at 540, it will do a "half-fast" job. (Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun- actually, it won't work at all).
 
Not the greatest in hay,but for $150,grab it. I paid $500 for a 7 footer to cut corn stalks to bale.
 
Thanks for the thoughts on the rpm difference. The mower is complete. I thought about using the MC for parts. Especially the blades. I might just clean it,service it and sell it.
 
I run my 7 footer with a 65 horse diesel and it works like a charm. I'm going to try a 45 horse diesel this summer to see how it goes. Read the manual carefully when you get it as these machines will do a good job if set up "by the book" and you watch your ground speed. They are nearly indestructible unless you get foolish with them.
 
I double checked the female end of the drive shaft. It has fine splines,but there are little pins on each side. There isn"t a locking pin or an alignment hole for a bolt. I think this is an end that you can put a male shaft in only a certain rotation. The short shaft with the fine splines is about 30 inches long. Sound familiar?
