ihc ace plow bottoms

I see from other's comments on the forum that the IHC ace plow worked well but I don't see mentioned if these plows are still being made and have shares available. I am looking to find a new bottom with available shares to adapt to my horse drawn walking plow (JD 199/share #107) or sulky plow JI Case 16"/share star manufacturing I 16). Does anyone know if the IHC ace plow (ACE8-54 I think) is still being made or equivalent and where to get it?

Where did you hear about the Ace btm. doing a good job of plowing ? Would you happen to be from Ohio?

ACE bottom was common here, have 2 ACE bottom plows on the farm now, used both last year.

Last shares I bought were from Case IH dealer, but that was a few years ago.

Hi folks, most of the IH 8A trailer plows sent to the UK up till imports ended in 1949 had ACE bottoms. ACE bottoms was one of the bottoms offerd by IH on the B12 & B13 plows for the UK built B250,B275 and B414 tractors. I have won many plowing matches with a B250 tractor and a 2 bottom B12 plow with ACE bottoms. The plow is set for 10 inch furrow width and I plow 5 to 6 inches deep. MJ

495man,

I would love to own a good IH #8 with Ace moldboards.

Are you interested in selling one of your plows? Or do you know of one for sale?

I have a very nice #8 with regular moldboards that is a real joy to use at plow days.

Don't actually have a #8, have C-25 and C-35 3pt hitch plows. There were many C-25 etc sold for the B series IH tractors back in the day.

If I do see a trailer plow with ACE bottoms for sale I can let you know.

Second the comment about using ace bottoms for competition.Edmond Wills was thought to be the best around here. He won the Middlesex County match with an ace bottom plowing against Kvernelands in the 70"s.His son still has the plow.Edmonds granddaughter was Ontario "Queen of the Furrow" about 10 years ago.

Steve -
Speaking from many, many years of horse-plowing experience, I can tell you that your idea, while good, won't work. I know, you're saying "why the **** won't it?!?!" For this reason: any horse drawn plow was meant to be pulled at the speed a team can walk (approx. 2 mph). Any of the tractor plow bottoms were meant to be pulled at LEAST 4 mph, 5 and 6 doing a better job with the later (1970's) models. Therefore, you aren't going to be able to pull the plow fast enough with the team to do an acceptable job of plowing. I took the bottoms off of a Ford 16" and put on an Oliver sulky plow about 5 years ago, and can tell you that it just doesn't work. It won't have any suck and the draft will gut your team. Please don't think that I'm being a smarta$$, but save your time and money, and buy some good blacksmith shares for your plow bottom.

To the OP: these guys will have everything you need, including new shares and moldboards: http://www.westlakeploughparts.co.uk/

If you ask the right Canadian (from Ontario) you might find new shares from Canada, rather than the UK. Although, they are evasive about their sources.

To "Mac AR": You must not be familiar with the IH ACE bottom. It has close ties to the horse plow bottoms from Eastern Canada and England and should do very well at horse plowing speeds. Do a google image search of "ace plow" and you'll find some representative pics of the bottom.

Well my, friends... I guess this ol' hillbilly went and stuck his foot in his mouth. Being from the north of Arkansas, I have never heard of an Ace bottom, but being a tractor bottom, I simply assumed (yea, I know...) that it wouldn't work. Wouldn't ya know it, though, that my newest issue of Small Farmers journal had a photo of the Ace bottom mounted on a new Pioneer sulky plow. Soooo.... I reckon that I will apologize and try to do a little research next time.
Keep 'em furra's straight, lads,

Mac
