Massey-Ferguson Model 72 Three Bottom Plow

I have a MF 3 bottom that will not sink in the soil. I'm not sure of all the terms for a plow so I am using the terms I see in my SHOUP Catalog. I am guessing I need new rib shares, although they don't look any different to me than the ones on my JD 4 bottom plow that worked fine last time I used it. On both these plows the shins go to the top of the rib share.

I was at an auction today and saw an International 531 three bottom. The shins on this plow extended beyond the bottom of the rib share. I mention this because it seemed like that plow would work great with those shins.

Do I need new rib shares or is there something I should be doing differently to get my MF plow to work right?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I would think the plow would need new points.

Rib shares may be thing as plow points. From my experience, if the plow is not sprung (hit something and bent the frame) a plow that will not go in the ground normally needs new points.

The new points should have negative draft, so they suck the plow in the ground.

Up,
It was my understanding the cutting edge of a new rib share was ground in such a way that it help pull the plow into the ground.

I know when I install new (points or rib shares) on a set of plows you will have to set the draft control to keep the plows from going to deep.

I would try replacing the rib shares and see if it helps your plow going in the ground.

just hope the frame of the plow is not sprung or twisted, sometimes you have to set the plows on a flat concrete floor and check the position of each point on the floor to determine if one plow is not level or even with the other plows.

From wiese description

RIB PLOW SHARES: The Rib Share is made from a section with a “rib” running horizontally through it for extra strength and wear. Rib shares are not available for all plows. The Rib Share is oil quenched, heat treated, and packed six per carton. Hard facing is not recommended for rib shares. Bolts and nuts not included.

You may have seen IH deep suck plow shares. Here is their description

DEEP SUCK SHARES: Deep suck shares to fit IH are manufactured using high- carbon, heat-treated steel. The special design includes a long nose for superior penetration and suction. The deep suck plowshare is ideal for use on tougher soils where it is difficult to keep the plow in the ground or when deeper penetration is desired. Available hard-surfaced or left hand upon request. Sold in vendor units of one each without bolts.

Thanks for the help. Another question I have is if the first point is different than the rest? On the plow I have, there is a part that curves downward toward the ground on the front of the first point, the rest of the points are straight right across the bottom. Is that first one supposed to be different, or did someone throw a different point on this plow?

Thanks again.

Each bottom should have identical "wear parts" installed.

Edit: The landside on the last bottom may have been different than the other landsides of the model 72. If so, the difference would have been to accommodate mounting of the furrow wheel.
