IH 46 baler packer driveshaft

What is the correct length for the packer driveshaft (the shaft from the gearbox to the crank that moves the packer fork) on an IH 46 baler? We have been keeping a tarp over the bale chamber to protect the hay and weighting the tarp down with mower guards. When I went to bale hay today, there was a mower guard where it got in the way of the packer fork moving, and that caused the packer driveshaft to twist about 90 degrees and bend. We got the twisted shaft (which seems to be basically a pipe with universal joints on the ends) off the baler, and my father thinks it can be fixed by cutting out the twisted part and attaching another piece of pipe to the ends, but we need to know the correct length.

I guess I have a 46 non operating baler that I would like to get rid of. Measured center to center of the holes in the universal joint yoke is 22 3/4 inches as near as I can tell. Hope this helps. I have the original operators manual but haven't looked in it. I never have gotten the baler in operating condition, BTW.
