NH 278 Finger bar spring

278 broke main drive chain, now I have a broken bearing assembly
on the end of the Finger / feeder bar. What is the recommended
method to compress the spring and replace it?

which bearing are you replacing? You don't have to take it apart to replace the bearings on the end that hooks to the chain.

They call it an bearing assembly, really its a square nylon block that holds the spring and slide guide in the tine bar. (Part #7 in the link below).

Be REALLY careful takeing it apart! they can become a bomb!Use a comealong,etc to pull it together

I put the one from my 76 in a tall manual press I have and it worked great. I will see if I have any pics. Jim

Thanks! I put the whole assembly in a come-along as soon as I saw it was broken.

Thanks for the press idea. I welded up a jig and used a bottle jack.
