Bought a couple implements from a local gentleman and he offered this disc for free if i was willing to dig it out of the hedgerow and haul it away. No tag or name anywhere i can find but all the casting # start with KK. Its in good working condition but don't really need it as i have an IH disc already. Any idea on value?

Thanks Tim

John Deere.Look for the JD logo on the cast parts. A similar disk sold at auction last year.Brought $200.00

My other Disc is an 8' IH #37 in great condition. I really only need 1 disc so any opinions on which is better? For now only use in a 1 acre garden and 1 acre of sweet corn. Thanks for all your help.

Appears to be a John Deere KB. I notice it has no scrapers. It would ball up in a heartbeat around here without them. Mike

What's the differences between a KB & KBA? How can you determine from photo it's a KB not a KBA? I know KB is an older model than KBA.
Thanks,Jim

Jim, the reason I called it a "KB" is because I have sales literature for "KB" and "KC" disks and it is identical to the pictures of the "KB". The "KC" has wider blade spacings. To be honest, I am not sure of the differences, either. I am looking through my information to find them, if they exist. My guess is that the main difference is in the gang bearings. The older disks had somewhat lighter bearing housings than the later ones (white iron bearings). Mike

Also, I believe the older disks had lighter spools as well. The disk pictured has the lighter spools on it. Mike

Keep the IH37. I have a 10'9" IH37 I use for field work often. You can still get bearings, spools, etc for it. I also have a JD one identical to yours with most (but not all) of the scrapers. It got used on a plow day about 6 years ago but has sat since. Mike

(quoted from post at 23:24:57 07/09/14) TxJim: The KBAs around here where newer and where wheel lift. Terrible disk for ridging a field.

Are you implying KBA's were lift type only? If so that's incorrect as there were drag only KBA's. KBA's are newer than a KB but not the other models I mentioned. If you think a KBA ridged bad you should have tried getting a RW or RWA to level the soil. Now I'm talking BAD.

Can you find and post some casting numbers from the disc in the photo? If so I'll try and ID the model. My curiosity is wanting to know. As Mike stated it's probably a KB
Thanks,Jim

I used to have one of those. I finally figured out that it wasn't worth my time and fuel to drag it around.

I had both the KBA drag and wheel carried and set properly they DID NOT ridge, something was wrong if they did. That was thw last pass before planting disk while the McCormick was more the primary disk but both were used in both places when there were 2 of use to do the disking. Pulled the drag type back of the wheel type many a time.

You bust have been trying to do with it what they were not designed to do and that is go out in unworked field and get it tore up, they werer designed to finnish a plowed field. And they were the best disk ever made for that.

We used RW disks for years without any ridging problems. You just didn't want to drive in the same place all the time. That holds true for any disk. They were a good disk for a lighter disk. Mike

Looks like a JD KBA to me, they do a nice job. I'd say it's worth $200-300 bucks. It will cost you that to replace the scrapers, I did on a KBL.

Tx Jim

I found a couple casting numbers.
On the pivot where the draw bar attaches is KK4416 and on the spool where i assume the bearings are is KK4645B

Thanks Tim

What is the difference between an KB and a KBA? I think i am going
to hang onto the KBA and my IH. Haven't got to try the JD yet but i
am a sucker for old iron.

Thanks Tim
