JD 71 Throws Sprocket Chain

My planter keeps throwing the chain. I replaced the tension spring, but it doesn't help. It looks like the sprockets that make the "S" loop slide in and out and maybe pulls the chain off the drive sprocket. Can I add washer spacers to take up some of the movement? Or do I need to take a link from the chain? Frustrating to make a run and find out you have planted the whole row.

Try a new chain first. Stretched and worn links may cause the chain to ride over the sprocket rather than lay into it correctly and throw it off....

Number 35 chain.Different than bicycle chain. But you DONT have to go to JD. any 'farm' store or other color dealer will have it.Take a link as a sample to get the right size.

Take it off and take it to a decent hardware store. they can usually match the number of links and cut you a new one in just a few minutes.

Jumping off chain can be from a worn out chain - hold it out sideways with the link pins vertical, if it droops down in an arch instead of sticking straight out it is well worn, stretched out.... This will make the links longer than the sprocket teeth spaces and it works itself off. Also wears out the sprocket.

Or, the sprockets don't line up, worn bearing, bushing, etc could make one sprocket not be parallel to the other, or shaft moved or sprocket slipped sideways so they aren't in line.

Or, if an idler is worn that it tracks sideways, pulling the chain out of line with the 2 sprockets. Often it works longer than you would think if the other 2 points are not a problem, but at some point it will be bad enough to cause a problem.
