Wagon Tongue for Log Splitter

My log splitter came with a hitch for a 2" ball. The only place I plan to take it is to our woods so I'd like to put a regular clevis type hitch on it. Since I'm not moving much weight, can I just use a 3/8"-1/2" plate with a single hole attached to the tongue and a pin/bolt through the draw bar or do I need a plate top and bottom? I'm getting a draw bar lock welded up to prevent rotation.

If this site will open for you they have one for $25 looks good,
you can take it off easy if you want to use the cross bar to pull post, etc:

I have had my old splitter since 1982, always used a ball hitch, but my old tractor has the straight pull type hitch.

Do it out of plate but make a top and bottom piece. It isn't going to have much force on it, but one short turn or pothole and you will snap a drawbar pin or mangle the hole you are running it through. Essentially all of the weight of the pull would be on whatever style of keeper you put on the bottom of your pin and that won't ever work out well. The pin should be there as an aid not to take the pulling force when the pulling gets hard.

For something that light, take a three inch piece of iron pipe, drill a hole through one end, and then cut and inch and a half slot out of the middle between the holes. Then weld the pipe to the hitch.

If it were me I would do that and then weld a larger piece of pipe beside the ball hitch. You can slide your pipe made drawbar in there and pin it but if you ever need to take it someplace you can remove it and use the ball hitch.
