mw wheel rake

are these rakes any good? found a i think decent deal on a 10 wheel one with mostly new tines and two new tires for $1850. what yall think about these rakes and the price? it looks like the front two wheels swing up in the pics what is the purpose of that?(to use as 8 wheel when in thick hay and 10 wheel is making to big of a windrow or?)

Own tow of the wheel rakes. The 3pt ones seem to use more teeth than a pull version. Not in numbers in the wheel just break more of them. The 3pt ones will have more problems with skipping on real hilly ground. As the 3 pt won't let them follow the contour of the ground as well. The back end will be held up sometimes. A 3pt will not make as nice of corners as the trailer version will either. I have both and have owned them for more than 10 years. Also have hilly ground.
If you can find one with the wheels in front of arm I think it would doa better job in heavy hay. The ones that fold up from the sides like a disc. I don't think will clear heavy hay as well. Grass hay probably would not be a problem. Alfalfa will sometimes tangle on the teeth causing bunches. I notice this more if the moisture is just at the right time. Another words if the dew is on the hay is more pliable allowing the material to flow through better than if a bit drier. I am in central MI I like to rake about 10 AM as the dew is not off yet and will rake very good till about 1:00 PM then it is getting to the dry bunching stage. I like the rake as you can rake about as fast as you can set the seat. The trailer rake is of the front fold version. Like the corn planters.
