#12 sorta works with poly

Over the last couple years I've been chasing a few of the gremlins in the Massey #12 baler we have and bit by bit I've been getting better performance.

For grins I bought a bale of poly twine and tried it. Knife side needs some adjustment as the knot sometimes would stay on the billhook and then become a Siamese twin with the next knot. After about 40 basis I switched that side back to 9000 sisal.

The other side seems to handle it fine although I think I could still tweek it a little more. I gotta do some more digging in the book because on the knife side it doesn't always pull the cut end all the way through the knot so it has 1 cut end and a loop, instead of both cut ends sticking out. Still, out of 650 bales today, 2 blew open when I hooked them off the baler, 3 more were lost on a bad twine switchover. Had a few bad ones right away because a little grease wound up on the knotter parts and took a few ties to rub off. A few more here & there and a couple bad knots. Used to be worse. Every time we get it out I get a little
better.

Hey Don, I usually buy my plastic from Farm and Fleet, 9000 works OK for me. This year I stopped by the local JD dealer when Son and I bought a new lawn mower. The parts head guy is the brother of a Dairy friend and suggested I try their 9003 tpoly twine, said it eliminated tying problems with their sm square balers so I bought a box and it worked very well. Thicker than the 9000 I use.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I haven't had a chance to look at it much yet as we've been going like crazy to get caught up with where we should be and it hasn't seemed to be a problem with sisal twine. The poly will bale fine for 150 bales or so on the other side then it'll act up and the knot just pulls apart or something as there is no sign of a knot at all.

I'll get the book out soon and take a look.

Knot in the end over the top is classic twine disc not catching the twine. on MF it is usually needle adjustment or hay dogs, while on JD usually tucker fingers.
