Tightening Round Disc Gang Bolts

I was doing a little work around my mothers place and noticed that both front gang bolts on the old Oliver disc need tightening.I know it has round gang bolts from working on it before.By the way, why would it have square holes in the spacers but round bolts?Anyway does anybody have any favourite tricks to tighten round gang bolts?

Secure the shaft so it can't turn (pipe wrench on spacer), then tighten the nut on the shaft. When you think that you have the nut tightened enough, hit the discs with a hammer - if the discs don't ring, you need to keep tightening the nut until the discs do ring! There should be some kind of keeper on the nut to keep it from coming loose, but getting it good and tight is essential.

I will add if they are loose enough that dirt has gotten between disc and spacer you will never be able to tighten it enough until its cleaned out.

Yup- dirt grit turns to powder and the discs are loose.

Dick2 has the answer, unless you have access to a large air compressor that will run an inch drive impact wrench. Hammer that bolt until it screams for mercy. Run it around the field one pass and put the wrench on it again. When it comes to disc gang bolts, there is no such thing as too tight.

I thought holding the spacer with a pipe wrench only works for square bolts, not the round ones.
For round bolts I usually try to hold the bumper with a wrench and then tighten the nut; might take a 2nd person. Check it every few passes in the field until it won't tighten anymore. I take the wrenches out on the tractor with me. A good thick nut with more threads than a hardware store nut helps too.

As far as his disk having round bolt in square spacers, maybe bolts were replaced in the past.

I was told by a mechanic to tighten them as tight as you can then thump the opposite end of the shaft with a good sized hammer. I generally use about a 3#. Give it few good whacks then tighten some more. do this several times. amazing how much more you can turn the nuts. But I agree with the others who say if its been running loose the spacers are probably full of dirt and you may not be able to tighten without disassembling the gang which may be hard to next to impossible.
