NH 55 Drive Pawl Replace

I did it a number of years ago, can't remember anything special, if I could do it musta not been too hard. ;)

The axle/hub can wear on those and make the wheel loose, so the pawl doesn't engage right and the fix might not last?

See if the spring and other stuff is all ok, naturally.

The hub has a bushing in it to turn on the axle. Take hub off, check for wear, replace bushing if necessary. You drive a small punch between the bushing and the hub to collapse the bushing for removal. Clean, oil carefully drive new bushing in. I believe there is a hole in the bushing which has to be placed in line with the hole in the hub which has the grease fitting in it.

The drive pawl needs to be fairly sharp where it engages the gears, which a new one should be. I would put in a new spring to give good pressure on the engagement of the pawl. There is a short rod which is pinned to the pawl which, along with the spring, provides engagement pressure for the teeth and pawl. This rod can get worn where it pivots in the plate, so a good idea is to replace it also. On one end of that rod is welded a smaller rod at right angles. The plate has a short length of spring steel riveted to it. This piece has a hook formed on the end. When wanting to tow the rake The short small rod is hooked onto the flat spring in such a way that the pawl is fastened out of engagement with the gears. This has to be done on both wheels. It is possible that the plate is too badly worn for service, in which case you need to get a new one. It is also possible for the hub to be broken in which case a new one is needed. This is not too common.

The reason for the lock out for transport is to keep the drive shaft from turning and wearing out the universal joints. I bought a 55 rake and the PO delivered it behind a truck, at highway speeds, without locking out the hubs. Guess what, I had to get a new shaft.

If, while transportating the rake, the pawls jump back into engagement, all the above mentioned hub parts and the hub will be destroyed.

I probably have some of this wrong, it's been 40+ years since I did that repair. I didn't have to do it again.
