644 NH Baler Revisited--

Earlier, I was having a problem with my 644 starting to tie. Never one particular side, sometimes both, sometimes fine. I called the dealer, and talked to the service manager, who called back a few hours later, and said it may be the needles are positioning wrong. They were supposed to be about 2" apart when in the bale throat. Well, they were almost together, so, after a contortionist act,we got them in adjustment, per the book. And, then it rained for a week. In fooling with them, I noticed that the twine always returned to one side (the inside) of the twine holding bullet. I also noticed that the ring that the bullet was in had a groove cut in it where the twine ran. Little light bulb! Was the twine moving back into the needles and not quite getting to the bale because the bullets weren't holding it? Into the parts breakdown, and the twine tubes are the same number. So we reversed them. Put the right on the left, and the left on the right.

Today I rolled up over 20 acres, and it operated flawlessly. Even when I was out of the windrow, the twine started every time. Just the smallest thing- that groove- was screwing it up. Oh well, it worked for close to 20 years. I doubt if I'll ever live to see the day they need to be replaced.....

WOnder if that was the same problem with my 650? Maybe so, oh well, too late. Upgraded. My Br740A has 22,000 bales through it. ONly 3 were twine tied....

Might have been. Thing was really aggrivating for a while.

I am glad to hear that you got your problem solved! Most especially because I am having the same problem with my 644. I'm going to go out and look at my baler to see if mine has that groove. This baler worked great up until last year, then all at once the trouble began. Awesome baler otherwise!
