Is this a burr mill?

I am getting interested in grinding corn for corn meal and
happened to stumble on this item on Ebay while looking for
equipment. I know absolutely nothing about grinding corn yet, but I
am thinking this is a burr mill. It's too far away for me to bid on and
it's local pick up. But I wanted someone to educate me on what this
is. Thanks

yep! Burr is steel, Grist is stone.

Burr mill. The fineness of grind is determined by tightening the plates (burrs) on the end opposite the pulley drive. We used to grind hog and cow feed with an IH burr mill. IDK about using one for corn meal.

We had one of those burr mills. It ground too slow when we tried to grind animal food. It didn't grind fine enough for corn meal. Dad had a small hand grinder in the basement that he used to grind corn for corn meal and also wheat for flour.

That's good to know all that stuff. So those steel plates must have like a rasp surface on them. I have seen the small stone wheels on a youtube of a guy grinding corn. Don't know why I am wanting to grind corn myself other than it looks like fun. I am leaning towards using the pulley adapter on my Super 55 to run a belt off of. Of it comes down do doing it by hand, I am into that too, but I really want to use a belt drive as a display.

Not sure, but don't think that is the distinction as I've seen grist mill stones referred to as "buhr" stones from a specific region in France IIRC.

I think your right, as back in Abe Lincolns day, the mills were referred to as grist mills. They were run either by water, wind, or, as in when they had a round trough like an old time grape press, and apple crusher.
Burr mills came out later, and they were made as shown in the picture. That's an OLD one. My uncle Walt had a JD burr mill, but no hammermill. Aunt Louise had around 1000 chickens at any givin time in the 50s and 60s when I knew them. I imagine they used it to crack corn for the hens. I never saw it used.

I have a grain mill attachment for a Kitchen Aid mixer that I grind meal with for my own use.
