JD 530 Round Baler

I came from an old NH 851 that picked up every bit of hay like a vacuum cleaner. The field was clean as can be when I was done.

I bought a used JD 530 round baler and installed new belts, bearings and several new guards on the pickup. The 530 doesn"t pick up nearly as clean as the NH 851 did.

I bale Coastal Bermuda and the crops hadn"t been that great lately due to the lack of rain but that really never affected the 851.

Is there something I need to look at or do differently or does the JD just not pickup that well? I set my pickup teeth about 1" off the ground so I"m not digging. Not missing any teeth or guards.

The NH has the floor behind the pickup attachment to support hay whereas on the JD there's a short area and then hay goes up directly onto forming bale. If hay is short/thin it tends to fall off forming bale as fast or faster than hay being picked up. How wide an area are you feeding into baler? I normally rake 27 ft(three 9' cuts) for my JD 467 in 2 bale/acre hay and it leaves no hay on the ground.

My windrows aren't as nice as yours. I'm barely doing 1 to 1.5 bales per acre with the lack of rain and a thin crop. I have good length 20-24" but it's thin from back to back droughts.

I have a 10 wheel Tunatti? Rake and I'm making a 4' windrow from 2 to 2.5 of the 9' swaths. Lots of trees so its hard to constantly pickup 3 swathes with all the weaving.

Actually that's not my rake but a photo on the H&S website although I do own a 14 wheel similar to photo. What type hay are you baling? If grass hay slow the tractor pto rpm's down to 450 rpm's.

It's Coastal Bermuda Grass. I seems to do better if I kick the speed up to 7 - 8 mph but it's hard to run that fast in a gopher ridden field. I normally run only 4-5 mph. Gopher mounds probably bouncing the pickup some causing it to leave hay behind as well.
