New Idea 176 elevator

How is something like this for unloading shelled corn from a wagon into a bin? I am thinking an auger might be more efficient but they are scarce and pricey. This unit was just put out for sale across the street. If it will work decent I can pick it up reasonably cheap. Plus I can use it for hay.

Verrrrry slow. Look at the cross-section of the elevator when it is raised to the top of the bin. Imagine how little corn is held by those flights at that angle. Why do we all use augers? hmmmm....no need to reinvent the wheel.

I rather thought it would be. I just didn't see that as being a high volume way to elevate shelled corn or other grain. Bales, ear corn...

Depends on what you want to do. I use a Kewanee 500 elevator to fill a couple bins every Fall. It's a 40' and the hopper works great for unloading a truck. As far as capacity, its about like a 6" auger. I don't know how wide a NI 176 is so can't compare the two. Elevators CAN move quite a bit of grain if they are set up right. I used a JD 350 until last Fall and after I increased the number of flights in the hopper 50% it would move as many bph as an 8" auger and I had very little money in it. Don't write off a good elevator if you don't have tens of thousands of bushels to move.

FYI for comparison to your NI 176. Kewanee 500 flights are 16" wide and JD 350 are 20" wide and are cupped.

Depth of paddles, spacing of paddles, incline of elevator, and speed of the chain all make a difference. I knew somebody that had a New Idea elevator and filled a bin with it (not sure what model). Ran it pretty fast off PTO and it moved a lot of shelled corn.

A elevator will not grind the shelled corn like a auger can an auger must be kept full not to grind it,and a elevator may not be fast either but if it gets your job done and in your price range who cares.
