#51 Power Mower (john deere)

i am restoring 1947 john deere 51 sickle mower. fits on an M. mower leeks gear oil around the shafts. parts manual shows oil rings which i assume are in bad shape. i need some advice on how to get these things apart. have a parts manual and operators manual but they have nothing about disassembly.

I rebuilt my No. 5 mower last year which is a bit different than the 51 but process should be the same. I would start with removing either the Sheaves. This to me would be easier than removing the flywheel that goes to the pitman. Hopefully that will allow you to get your top and bottom shaft out of the housing. When I took my No.5 apart I ended up needing to take the flywheel off. Afterning heating, PB Blaster and a puller I ended up breaking the flywheel and beating it off with a hammer. No.5 mower flywheels are easy to find, not so sure about one for a #51. I would say start spraying it with PB Blaster a few times a week and maybe heat it a few times before you try and pull any of it apart. It was not a hard job by any means however the flywheel removal was a pain on mine.
