AC 303 baler

Getting ready for hay, and the last time I used our Allis 303 bale chief, we were having trouble with it not wanting to knot on one side. Up till now it has been a fairly good baler. I've check my owners manual, and I believe some parts need to be replaced. I do not know if it is correct, but somewhere I heard that the knotters on an AC 303 bale chief were the same as on some of the older New Holland balers. If so which models would interchange with it? Thanks for any responses.

They might be the 'same' but I doubt if any parts interchange. The "Deering' knotter(most popular/common) was used by several different MFGers. But the parts were different.

Back in the 70's we had a 303, and I believe my father did put some NH parts on his one season. But my dad had a way of making things work.

Over the years I've owned Deere,NewHolland,Hesston balers. They all used the 'same' Deering knotter. No parts interchange. However that doesnt mean that one or two parts could not be modified to work.My brother in law has a Ford 542.There is a JD or NH part(wiper arm?) that he modifies to 'fit'.

I've had and used both NH and the Allis 303.
The 303 was the best baler of any of the older low capacity balers. Wish I'd never sold my 303 but when someone comes along and offers $1200 more than I paid (plus used it 12 yrs), it went down the road. Now I use a NH 269 and 273. Knotters on the Allis 303 were identical to the NHs -most all parts are the same but hay feeding system was different & better than the NHs.
I just went to a local Agco Dealer for parts on both brand balers.
My 303 was setup nice and rarely missed a knot after I went thru the knotters 4 years before it was sold. Never made banana bales.

Some of the gears in the NH knotters changed design and when I bought my NH269 it wouldn't complete a knot on one side, just sheared pins. Someone had replaced many or most all of the knotter parts (it was like new) but had put in one gear of the wrong style on only one side. I think they got frustrated when it still didn't tie and traded it to a dealer for another baler. The dealer didn't or couldn't fix it and just passed it off at a local auction. I bought it cheap enough it didn't matter to me when I found the problem.
