Bush Hog Questions

We have some old overgrown pasture we are thinking about reclaiming. It is covered with what we call Autumn Olive or Russian Olive. The stuff is thick, tall and some of the stump branches are as large as 4 inches in diameter.

Trying to figure out how to get rid of this stuff without trashing my tractor and present bush hog.

Question is - is there some type of bush hog out there that can handle this stuff or do I need to consider another type implement or removal method?

Thanks in advance!

I have a stump jumper and a slip clutch on my Brush Hog, 4 inches would not even slow me down

That size is doable to rip out with a chain around the base of the stem. It is a lot of work but you'll get a cleaner field when you're done without all of the wood shreds everywhere.

I don't envy you. AO is a nasty invader. The DNR recommended it for wildlife plantings. I have rows for travel lanes. It is a constant battle to keep up with the spreading. AO produces thousands of berries and every thing eats them and pass fertilizer with the seed. Their growth form will make getting close to a 4" stem will be tough. A bulldozer might be your best approach. If you just cut them, they will re-sprout and be four feet tall by fall. Mine is all in bloom right now and the bumble bees are really working it. Good luck.

I would use a tree grinder on the front of my skidsteer.
I have mowed Red Cedar that were over 4 inches in diameter, with a DC Case and an antique real Bush Hog. Slow going and hard on things.

I sold a guy a Brown Tree Cutter about 20 years ago. It could gnaw through a 12" tree in the video the company sent. It looked like a bush hog with a spring loaded rear guard that retracted as you backed into stuff you couldn't drive over. It was not cheap $.

Autumn Olive isn't that tough. It is shallow rooted. Get some Spike pellets, kill em out, and in a year, you can knock them over with a front end loader. I used to have it growing under an electric line, where the birds perch, mowed it out, for a couple years, spiked it, then dug the stumps out with a little skid loader.

There is a skid steer attachment made in Boerne Texas called a Root n All. It is excellent for mesquite and such. It does require a heavy duty skid steer. This attachment is great for removing the root systems. It's on you tube as well
